"Fashion fades, Style remains"

Fashion and politics have never been two genres of life to really integrate, possibly because its seemingly a male dominated profession, and honestly how excited can we get over several dark toned suits on a bunch of middle-aged men? However since Michelle Obama created a name for herself with her elegant yet iconic way of dressing at the side of the most powerful man across the pond, we are starting to see a lot more of our own politicians spouses hit the tabloids in a not so fashionable frenzy. As the general elections begin to loom we see Cameron, Brown and the other one hit the media with force, but this yea
r it is not just the candiates themselves pounding the papers but their wives too... Question is can they really do it like Michelle? And if so, who will out dress who in out newest election battle outside of the ballot box?

And the candidates for 'best dressed politicians arm-candy are'-
-Sarah Brown
(Wife of Labor Prime Minister Gordon Brown- Pictured top left)
-Samantha Cameron
(Wife of Conservative leader David Cameron- Pictured right)
-Miriam Clegg
(Wife of Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg- Pictured below)

Now it's easy to seen none of these three women are going to win any outright style awards, nor gain any recognition for their wonderful abilities to create brilliant style ensembles, that however, doesn't mean they are going to hide away in the back of their pencil skirt stuffed closets!
Miriam for example, (Team Democrats, for those politically unaware) brought out something shiny for her husbands recent political convention, it was in fact a side bag- wait for it... made of aluminium ring pulls, to show she too was environmentally friendly! Unfortunately I can't say I'll be rushing out to purchase one, even though it is all for a good cause.
Miriam isn't the only political WAG to attempt to change the public, and more importantly their husband's electorate's perception of themselves. Samantha Cameron, doing an arguably better job than the rest. Her dress was also pictured on Myleene Class (what an achievement) is seemingly trying to prove that just because her husband is the leader of the universally known Toffee Tories she doesn't feel the need to dress like good old Maggie Thatcher! Instead she actually seems to be dressing her age, which is more that can be said about Mrs Brown, who seems to only own unflattering jersey dresses and dull-tones pencil skirts, which only draw attention to her aging gut!
I think it can safely be said that out three contenders have much catching up to do if any of them want match up with the effortlessly stylish Michelle Obama, but then again so does half the rest of the world! None-the-less we seem to be trying, and at that (although possibly biased) my 'best dressed politician's arm candy' goes to... [Drum roll Please...]

Samantha Cameron... Fingers crossed the national election will follow suit!

PostHeaderIcon The new face of...

As the Spring Summer ad campaigns fly onto the glossy pages of our magazines its interesting to look at them as a collective and get to know the faces behind the image...

Brand- Burberry
Models- Emma Watson, her younger brother Alex Watson and Max Hurd.
Photographer- Mario Testini

Emma reappears yet again this spring for Burberry's classic ad campaign, only this time she's enlisted the help of her younger brother in a successful attempt to launch his modelling career. Alongside these ridiculously attractive creatures pose Max Hurd (featured left), George Craig and Matt Gilmour.

The gorgeous 18 year old Max Hurd grew up in Brazil and is none other than the grandson of Lord Douglas Hurd, foreign secretory for both Thatcher and Major- A well matched link to the iconic English brand.
Fellow model George Craig is the lead vocalist of band 'One Night Only' as well as part, while Matt Gilmour's new to industry and is also being headed by this seemingly simple campaign.

Brand- Dior
Model- Karlie Kloss

Photographer- Steven Meisel

Dior's poster girl of the season is 17 year old Karlie Kloss, ranked 8th on the top model's woman list. Kloss already has an overly successful line on achievements under her belt, not only is she signed to Elite Model Management and has appeared on the cover of American Vogue, she's also walked on numerous prestige catwalks and advertised for Nina Ricci, Chloe, Lacoste and Marc Jacobs to name a few. This young American's career seems unstoppable at present as she consistently re-appears on our pages.

Brand- Prada
Model- Rasca Zukauskaite
Photographer- Steven Meisel

Prada's campaign shot yet again my Meisel contains model Rasca Zukauskaite, set to make it big this year she's a relatively fresh face to fashion, but after having been snapped up by Prada for her first campaign only positive things are sure to follow for Rasca.

Brand- Fendi
Model- Anja Rubik
Photographer- Karl Lagerfeld.

Not only is it enough to become the face of Fendi for 2010, but to be shot by one other than Karl Lagerfeld? Now that's a little too much, right? Then again Rubik, 24, is not just any model, no she's borderline top model.

Brand- Giorgio Armani
Model- Nimue Smit
Photographer- Hosh Olins

17 year old Nimue Smit is topped as an essential rising star of the fashion industry. She had a whirlwind of work last year which involved her travelling half way around the world and back, including becoming th face of Prada and See by Chloe, starring in TopShop's ad campaign, which is only going to get more manic in the following 11 months.

Some other famous faces this season...
Maddona appears in Dolce and Gabbana
Laura Stone poses for Louis Vuitton
Ginta Lapina for Derek Lam.

PostHeaderIcon There is nothing knew in fashion...

It's strange to see how a person's style alters within a lifetime, how each year can transform an individuals taste in clothing. You never really realise this until you dig out the old photo albums, the ones where you look at the majority of photo's ans ask yourself that same question 'What the hell was I thinking?' I t goes to say, that without a doubt fashion is constantly evolving, and each decade of the past hundred years has brought us a very different look, from pencil skirts to punk there was by far a lot more room for a fashion error that any other of the safer centuries.

But what has this century got to offer? I sit really true that we have entered the conventional, that people have lived the mistakes of the past and are not prepared to re-enter such a horrific memory? Or are we just
going to revive them, mimic the past yet do it better? We have the experience and knowledge they didn't possess at the time, we can merge the looks that they were yet to create. Ideally we can make the 21st century a bigger, better and more stylish century that the last with an equal amount of seasonal transformation and stylish flexibility.

The latter idea seems to already be in motion, it may have taken a few years to do so but of late there are definite traces of the past on both our catwalks and high streets. Take last year's printed legging's and harem pants, it was like re-living MC Hammer's 'Can't Touch This' music video without the added cringe factor, the perfect example of how we are prepared as a nation to adapt to the many style variation placed in front of us. On a larger scale there have been the constant restoration of modified trends, grunge for instance has been knocking at our doors for some time ans has become a favourite amongst the young A-list, both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have adopted a more polished version of the trend as their signature style amongst many others. The same can be said with the 20's look of sophistication, with Chanel consistently channelling the ere and so many designers looking to them for inspiration it's an undertone never off the catwalk and consequently the red carpet.

The question is are we going to do this revitalisation of style in a more tasteful, less severe manor than before? Or is that just an illusion, are we too going to be able to look back in the same way our parents did and ask that identical question out of a similar disgust? Honestly, I hope so!

I have never been much of a 'Whistles' fan, I found their collections predictable and safe, a look for which I have always had little interest in. However, since Jane Shepherdson has taken the brand under her severely stylish wing, a considerable change can be seen in the design aspect of each piece. Now instead of the traditional uninspiring palette we'd expect to see, 'Whistles' is delivering us a sleek and stylist collection designed to push the boundaries of fashion in order to compete with the giants of today's higher class highstreet. This is a brand who has recently received a new lease of life and the chance to refocus their inspiration towards the original and individual idea that enthused the company back in 1976, and so far their Autumn/Winter collection has done just that, mixing stylish silhouettes with detailed embellishments and all in key trend colours, 'Whistles' is now producing quality garments for the fashion forward elite without the designer budget to spare, and their Spring/Summer collection is currently highly anticipated to be even bigger and better than their previous success.

PostHeaderIcon Style snippet...

Initially, i was a firm believer that over-the-knee boots were one of those trends designed only for the catwalk, that in reality it seemed obscure to bring these hooker style shoes onto the high-street. However, months into the craze and I'm gradually switching teams, so much so i almost purchased a flat pair in the January sales, before then opting for a safer, shorter studded option... I did say gradually!

There is a fine line when dressing the over-the-knee boot between becoming a fashion forward female or a street walking whore, a line even some celebrities are finding it difficult not to cross, a la Heidi Montag, who clearly not only crossed said line but leaped so far over it is no longer even in sight. It is images like this which really put me off the idea of even risking such a failure, but then one must remember that people who actually look in the mirror after getting dressed can pull off the daring trend, like Hilary Duff for instance, a young lady who successfully classed up the boot with a casual dress and legging look.
So the verdict is in, and personally I'm all for a flat over-the-knee paired with either leggings or the spray on skinny jean, however a heeled pair just brings back the not so fond fashion memory of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, a look no woman out of the profession wishes to relive. Overall its a look I would recommend, so long as the necessary precautions are put in place to preven a fashion faux pas...

1. Never pair with any other leather item of clothing, it screams 'Prossie' louder than a fog horn.
2. Ensure you keep clean, simple lines, think skinny jeans or leggings... the fewer the frills the more effective the look.
3. If you are planning on wearing your over-the-knee's with a dress ensure the hemline is slightly above the top of the boot to elongate the leg.
4. If you are on the shorter side of the height spectrum add a heel to the boot and choose a pair no higher than just obove the knee . Also try stying them with a cropped jacked to create the illusion of a longer body.
5. Do not, and i repeat do not purchase a pair that are too tight on the thigh, this can cause any fat to bulge over, a not so alluring look ladies.
6. And finally always look in the mirror before leving the safelty of your humble abode and ask the question 'am i going to get some old and perverted man pulling over to ask my houry service rates?' If the answer is yes... try again!

PostHeaderIcon Best dressed of 09'...

2009 has been an interesting year in terms of celebrity style, we've watched as Lady GaGa's gone GooGoo over any item deemed un-wearable by the masses, Madonna's pranced around in even smaller garments than when she was in her 20's and on a rather more positive note, many unexpected fashion IT girls have emerged both across the pond and closer to home bringing fashion a new lease of life.

Taylor Momsen
Taylor is often over looked in the Gossip Girl style wars, what with co-stars Blake and Leighten consistently never failing to put a Louboutin fashioned food wrong. But with a role in of America's hottest teen drama's and a cast closet to die for Momsen seems to have made it, all at just the tender age of 16. Over the past year we've watched Taylor's style mature into an edgy, well constructed trend of her own with a prominent twist of individuality. I have a feeling that this young starlet's career is only just beginning to blossom, and similarly so is her style.

Lily Allen This lady has come a long way from the party dress and trainer collaboration, the symbolic style statement our very own princess of pop initiated alongside her successful career. 2009 seemed to be the year that Lily Allen decided to develop into a mature individual, and of course her fashion followed swiftly behind. Not only did she make an appearance at Chanel's Spring collection catwalk in Paris, but she also starred in their classically produced yet true to character add campaign, a privilege not many can say they have experienced. This year has been the year that Allen has removed herself from many worst-dressed lists and even placed herself on a few best-dressed, and I think this trend is only to continue into 2010 as she discovers what truly suits and flatters her image.

RihannaRihanna has encountered a lot over the past twelve months, so much so that it may have destroyed any less of an individual, but not this determined young singer. She has bounced back with such a force that it wasn't just the music industry that felt the tremors, no Rihanna's shocking style has introduced her to an entirely new type of recognition, one as an influential style symbol- think Lady Gaga with a touch of class. At 21 years of age, and a career which seems indestructible, this inspirational girl is becoming a woman, a well dressed, dangerously stylish woman, who isn't afraid to express her individuality through fashion.

Olivia PalermoKnown over here for here role in 'the Hill's' spin of show 'the City' Olivia Palermo's character has come under somewhat scrutiny of recent, however the more we see of her, be it on our screen's or in our magazine's, the less we focus on her slightly severe, career climbing behaviour and the more we devote our attention to her impeccable clothing collection. This unexpected American socialite seems to have stolen our fashion hearts with her classic style and ability to co-ordinate. Throughout 2009 Olivia and her flawlessly finished style has wormed her way in amongst the fashion elite to claim her crown.

Jessica Stroup

Stroup's career truly kicked off last year with her landing a role in the his US drama 90210, and since then her sense of style has began to develop from playschool preppy into a slightly more adult, rock chic. Not one known particularly well for her attire over here, Stroup has slipped under our fashion radar. A mistake i truly hope can be corrected in 2010 as she is fast joining the Olsen twin grunge trend that just fails to work on any individual simply not famous. With a nudge in the right direction and the coverage needed for that true iconic recognition Stroup could emerge the best dressed amongst her designer clad co-stars this year.
